New King’s Cup trophy unveiled

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation unveiled today in Riyadh the new King’s Cup trophy in a ceremony attended by clubs’ representatives, ath-letes, and media.

The previous trophy was introduced in the 2011-2012 season, which Al-Hilal now has the right to keep after winning the tournament four different times.

The semifinal draw on Wednesday placed Al-Hilal up against Al-Ittihad in Jeddah, whereas Al-Nassr will play Al-Khaleej in Riyadh.

The winner of the King’s Cup will receive SR10 million ($2.6 million). Derived from previous designs, the trophy is made of sterling silver coated with pure 24-carat gold. It weighs 9.32 kg, a nod to 1932, the year the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was unified.

The cup is topped with a football coated with pure gold and malachite, with 4 descending handles, in addition to two swords and a palm tree in the middle, representing Saudi Arabia’s emblem. The trophy is 54 cm high, 18 cm wide, has a base diameter of 17 cm and is made of marble and malachite.—APP
