Maryam Nawaz set to become first-ever CM as Punjab Assembly session today

LAHORE – The Punjab Assembly is all set to elect a new chief minister in today’s (Monday) session with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz is the strong candidate to bag the slot.

Maryam Nawaz will be the first female to become chief minister in the history of Pakistan if she succeeds in the election.

The session of the provincial assembly, which was scheduled for 11am, is yet to start. The session will be presided over by newly-elected Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan.

The PML-N currently has the backing of 224 MPAs in the provincial assembly.

The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) has fielded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Aftab Ahmad Khan for the post. Khan has the support of 103 MPAs.

How Many Votes are Required to Win CM Election?

A candidate needs to secure the support of 187 members in the house 327 to win the CM slot.

The PML-N and SIC are expected to hold separate meetings of the parliamentary parties ahead of election for the CM.

On Saturday, Malik Ahmad Khan was elected as the new speaker of the Punjab Assembly on Saturday.

Outgoing Speaker Sibtain Khan presided over the Punjab Assembly session with members of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) raising slogans against each other.

Malik secured 225 votes against Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) candidate.
