ECP moves Supreme Court against PHC verdict on bat symbol

ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has challenged the Peshawar High Court’s (PHC) verdict on Pakistan Tehreek-e-InsafI’s (PTI) intra-party elections and award of bat symbol in the Apex Court.

The petition was filed after evaluating the verdict of two member bench of the PHC at a meeting at the ECP office earlier on Thursday.

The top electoral body pleaded declaring the PHC decision illegal as the PTI did not hold intra-party elections as per the Election Act.

On Wednesday, the PHC nullified the ECP’s order of stripping the PTI of its iconic symbol bat.

In its verdict, the court directed the electoral watchdog to upload the PTI’s certificate on its website.

Meanwhile, the PTI has submitted contempt of court petition against the ECP for not implementing the PHC verdict.

It stated that the ECP has not uploaded the certificate on the PTI’s intra-party elections on its website.

It stated that the failure to do so falls under contempt of court.

PTI has named Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja, ECP members and secretary as the respondents.
