Big relief for Nawaz Sharif as IHC acquits PML-N chief in Avenfield reference

Islamabad High Court on Wednesday acquitted Pakistan Muslim League supremo Nawaz Sharif in the Avenfield reference.
The development comes as the country’s top anti-graft watchdog National Accountability Bureau withdrew its appeal against Sharif’s acquittal in Flagship reference.

The counsel of ousted premier Amjad Parvez argued that NAB failed to prove any of the charges framed against Nawaz Sharif, challenging the prosecution’s evidence. He apprised the court that in the appeals against the sentences in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references, the court accepted the appeals of the co-accused Maryam Nawaz and Muhammad Safdar, and released them.

After the arguments, Justice Gul Hassan Aurangzeb announced the verdict, the suspension of sentence was based on the same grounds, and mentioned several decisions of the apex court used in suspensions verdict.

In July 2018, Mr Sharif was sentenced for 10 year jail in Avenfield Properties corruption case for owning assets beyond known income and an additional 1-year for not cooperating with authorities both of which were to be served concurrently.
